Safely Decorating For The Holidays

Nothing lights the holiday season like a beautifully decorated home. To get the most out of your decorations, be sure to set them up safely. Here are important tips to keep in mind:
  • Make sure your Christmas tree is well supported in the stand and gets plenty of water (cut 1 or 2 inches off the bottom of the trunk to help the tree absorb water). Keep it at least 3 feet away from any heat source.
  • Leave your Christmas tree in the house for only about two weeks. After that, it can dry quickly and present a serious fire hazard.
  • When purchasing electrical decorations, make sure to buy only products with a UL rating.
  • Follow installation and usage instructions for lighting, to the letter.
  • Make sure all lights are in good working order before setting them up. Replace nonworking bulbs and do not use items with exposed wires or damaged connections.
  • Plug outside lights into a grounded outlet.
  • Never leave lights plugged in overnight or when you are leaving the house.
  • Keep burning candles clear of window treatments, other flammable objects, and the reach of children.
A safe holiday is a happy holiday. We wish you the very best of both!

Safely Entertaining For The Holidays

‘Tis the season to be jolly! The challenge for hosts and hostesses is to keep the holiday party festive, but also to keep their guests safe. Follow these home entertainment safety tips to help make sure family and friends have a great time and a safe time:
  • Shovel driveways and sidewalks so guests can come and go without slipping and sliding. Keep entryways well lit.
  • Work out entry and exit plans for guests using wheelchairs or who have difficulty walking.
  • Make sure all guests have a designated driver. This is always important, but never more so during the holiday season, when driving conditions can be difficult.
  • Pre-arrange for cab service or other transportation options for guests as a backup plan.
  • Serve nonalcoholic beverages, including coffee and water. Encourage guests to drink coffee as the party winds down.
  • Did someone spill a drink? Look for mishaps and clean them up quickly so no one takes a fall.
  • Make your home child-safe whenever little ones are present. Keep cleaning products, medications and other toxic or dangerous items out of reach; cover electrical outlets; and lock cabinets and doors.
Hosting a safe party is an important responsibility, but your guests will appreciate your efforts. In addition, safe entertaining reduces the risk for costly insurance claims.
