How to Protect Your Company’s Intellectual Property

The theft of intellectual property, such as trademarks, patents and copyrights, is a real threat – costing U.S. businesses an estimated $250 billion annually. There are a number of precautions that businesses can take in order to reduce the risk of intellectual property theft and protect their company.

What can you do?
  • Know your valuable assets. Don’t underestimate the value of information. By understanding exactly what you company’s valuable assets are, you can take the proper precautions to guard them from theft. Intellectual property can include databases, source codes, programs, content, designs and more.
  • Register your intellectual property. Once an original work is created, it is automatically protected by copyright law. However, registering your company’s intellectual property with the U.S. Library of Congress Copyright Office allows you to better defend the work’s rights should theft occur. Using the © Copyright symbol and the year the work was first published lets viewers know it’s protected.
  • Provide clear contracts. Intellectual property theft is often committed by company employees, who can steal confidential information and use it at competing firms. In order to protect your works, put in place strong contracts that employees must sign, preventing them from sharing confidential information.

Yet the steady growth in information technology means that electronic data theft, security breaches and hacking has become more complex and prevalent, as well.

Your company may have the most advanced risk tools and security features in place to protect sensitive information, but it’s also important to keep you employees educated about the risks and precautions.
