Is Your Home Ready for the Cold?
Winter’s Just around the Corner!

Preparing your home for the cold weather to come is more than good sense—it’s a smart investment that will pay dividends for years to come! By taking a few simple steps, you can save yourself time and money, not to mention prevent losses and minimize insurance claims down the road.

Steps for Winterizing Your Home
  • Perform Basic Inspections: Check your furnace to make sure the filter, pilot light and thermostat are all working properly, and take a look at the plumbing to see if any exposed pipes should be covered to prevent freezing. Check your chimney to see if it’s clear of debris and if it needs a cleaning. Check all doors and windows for potential heating leaks that could raise your winter bills.
  • Fix What’s Broken: Before winter comes, make sure all your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. Repair anything on porches, railings, stairways or walkways where people could slip and fall.
  • Pay Attention to Warning Signs: Lights that flicker and dim or frequent trips to the circuit breaker are warning signs that it’s time to call an electrician and prevent potentially serious electrical concerns.
  • Clean Your Gutters: When gutters and downspouts are clogged, rainwater and melted snow can back up, possibly damaging your home; what’s more, water freezes can cause gutters to expand and crack, leading to water leaks inside your home. Clean these thoroughly, along with ridge vents, to help your home breath properly even in winter.

10 Tips for Driving in Snow and Ice

Driving in the winter months is not only challenging; it can be downright dangerous. Harsh weather tests the limits of a car and the abilities of its driver. Before the snow and ice hits this year, review these basic tips for driving in the winter weather!
  1. Give your car a good checkup to make sure the battery, antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, windshield wipers, headlights and tires are all ready for the cold.
  2. Stock your car with necessary winter items like a snow brush and an ice scraper, blankets and a flashlight with batteries. Other good ideas: a bag of sand or salt, warning flares or triangles, gloves, mittens, booster cables, nonperishable snack items and a candle and matches.
  3. Turn on your headlights in rain or snow even when it’s still daylight outside to compensate for lower road visibility.
  4. Don’t follow too closely when behind other cars—greater following distance means greater amount of time to stop if you need to suddenly.
  5. Slow down because the slower you go, the easier it is to stop.
  6. Stay defensive and alert. Don’t assume an intersection will be clear or that you can zoom through a light when it’s green: always scan ahead to spot potential danger.
  7. Watch the road reflectors when it’s hard to see in front of you, and use those to know how to keep heading forward.
  8. Stay in one lane when you can rather than darting back and forth between traffic.
  1. Keep both hands on the wheel so you have more control.
  2. Make sure you have enough insurance to protect you in case of an accident.
