Winterizing Your Home is Insurance Against Wet and Cold Calamities

With winter approaching, it pays to think about ways to prepare your home against wet, cold calamities brought on by failure of key structures and equipment designed to keep you safe and warm.

Before the winter comes...
  • Check your furnace or hire a qualified service person to do it for you.
  • Inspect your chimney for animals, debris and cracks in the structure.
  • Clean your gutters to avoid water and ice backups that cause roof damage.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure units are working.
  • Cover or insulate outdoor plumbing to avoid freezes and broken pipes.
  • Trim back trees near the house to avoid fallen limbs or scraping damage.
  • Fix porches, railings, stairways and walks to prevent trips and falls.
  • Extinguish candles when you are not present.
  • Review outdoor lighting connections so that lights are in safe condition.
  • Have your electricity checked if you notice flickering or dimming.
  • Add extra insulation to your attic so heat does not melt snow and ice. When the water refreezes and builds up, it can cause ice dams and interior water damage.
Winter weather can also fluctuate between freezing and flooding. If your home is equipped with waterproofing or sump pumps, check these important safeguards.

It is also imperative to make sure your home is properly covered in case a cold and wet mishap occurs, in spite of these preparations. Meet with a Mavco representative to learn more about insurance costs and savings.
