Protect Yourself While Away From Home

Traveling during the Thanksgiving or Christmas season? Protect your home and yourself for the duration of your trip by taking these steps.

Before You Leave
Tell your trusted neighbors when you’ll be gone. Have them bring your newspaper and mail inside, or else arrange to have delivery held — nothing screams, “I’m not home” like a pile of newspapers in the driveway and packages on the doorstep. Unplug any non-essential electric appliances, but set a few lights on a timer.

For winter trips, set the thermostat at 60° F and leave open the cabinets under the sink, to keep pipes from freezing. As an extra safeguard, have someone check on your house every other day.

During Your Trip
Carry on, rather than checking, your expensive items when boarding a plane, ship or train. Checked luggage is handled by multiple people out of your sight, and can sometimes get lost. Once you’ve arrived, lock your valuables in a hotel or ship safe. When you’re sightseeing in unfamiliar areas, avoid carrying large sums of cash, and don’t wear or carry valuables at the pool or beach.

Cover All Your Bases
In addition to these preventative tips, a travel policy is always a good safeguard. For trips less than 90 days you can purchase a travel policy that includes emergency medical and dental care, emergency medical transportation, travel accident coverage, and protection against lost or delayed luggage with a 24 hour hotline. Additionally, you can include trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

Staying Smart Abroad

Many colleges and universities offer short study abroad courses over winter break. These can be enriching and eye-opening experiences, especially for students who can’t commit to a whole semester of study abroad. Even for a short trip overseas, make sure your college student is prepared to be safe:
  • Photocopy passport and other important travel documents. If a passport gets lost, it’s much easier to replace if you have a copy on hand.
Study Abroad
  • Study the country’s cultural norms before leaving — culture shock can catch you off guard!
  • Check that your student is covered for health insurance while abroad. There are options for a short-term international policy if your coverage doesn’t extend overseas.
